Watanabe Seiran (1851–1918) was a prominent Japanese painter, calligrapher, and key figure of the nanga (literati) painting tradition during the Meiji period.

Born in Japan, Seiran eventually came to study under Okuhara Seiko, one of the most celebrated and successful female bunjin (literati) artists of 19th-century Japan.

Seiran transitioned from being Seiko's student to becoming her lifelong companion, living and working side-by-side for more than forty years. Seiran was an exceptionally talented artist in her own right, but she also managed household and studio affairs, helped train students, and assisted with major commissions. She became so fluent in Okuhara Seiko’s distinct artistic style and brushwork that it is often difficult to distinguish their unsigned works from one another.

After Seiko's death in 1913, Seiran preserved their shared legacy until her own passing in 1918.

Watanabe Seiran and Okuhara Seiko shared a domestic, creative, and romantic partnership spanning over four decades. In historical and queer studies, their relationship is recognized as an enduring same-sex partnership of mutual support, professional collaboration, and deep personal devotion.

Their lives together existed in tandem with Seiko’s well-known rejection of conventional Meiji-era female roles (Seiko famously cut her hair short, wore men's clothing, adopted a gender-neutral name, and engaged in traditionally masculine scholarly and martial arts). As Seiko's primary companion, manager, and artistic equal, Seiran shared in a household that deliberately subverted societal expectations for women of that era.
